Let It Go
Writing about your past can be hard. It drudges up feelings that you stuffed way down deep and the feelings you thought you were over already. It doesn’t have to be writing, either - I have been in those moods where I just wanna roll around in anger and self-pity, “You know, God, if he hadn’t done that one thing, I wouldn’t be sitting here right now having to deal with this thing. Why did it have to happen to me? I know there are people in this world that deserve this more than I do. Now I can’t do the other thing all because of that one thing He did.”
…and the cycle continues.
From another perspective, it may seem like you just need to get over it. That ship has long sailed, sister, so why are you holding on so tightly? LET. IT. GO. Yes, I know Elsa, but it’s just not that easy. Or maybe it is?
If you’ve ever ran relays, you know that you’re supposed to hold the baton outstretched as far as you can and you start the handoff to the next runner early, but what goes through your head is more like, “This is my precious and I’m going to squeeze the life right out of it until I know that I can securely place it in the next runner’s hands (two hands, Mister!), and know without a shadow of a doubt that they can carry it across the finish line.”
It rarely works that way. We know this. That baton gets fumbled around like a hot potato and possibly even dropped a time or two before it is securely in the next runner’s hand.
We also know that the handoff must happen in order for the race to continue. It doesn’t matter if it’s sloppy, nerves got in the way, or it drops - there is still a race to be won.
Here’s where the cool part happens. That baton, no matter how many times it was dropped and picked up again, now belongs in the arms of the one who was hand-picked to finish strong. You did your part. You make your way to the sidelines to catch your breath and watch. It’s not your race to win anymore. And once the race is finished, that baton gets placed right alongside a bunch of other sweaty, banged-up batons and you never see it again.
When it comes to anger, will you tuck it under your arm and ignore your training, or will you trust the one in front of you and stretch it out as far and as early as possible to hand it off so your part can be complete and you have more time to catch your breath? The choice is yours!!!
With God we will triumph; he's the one who will trample our adversaries. Psalm 108:13
